Day 14 of 31 Hemp Products: Cord

PRODUCT: Hemp Cord

SUB MARKETS: Crafts, Packaging, Rope, Yarn

Day 14 of our 31 Days of Hemp campaign highlights an old, familiar friend to sailors and crafty folks alike: hemp cord. Made of long bast fibers from the plant stalk, individual plies of yarn are spun into strands. One or more strands are then twisted to achieve a particular cord diameter and load [tensile] strength. Cords can be twisted to form a strong rope that rivals all other natural fibers. In 1942, the US Department of Agriculture even launched “Hemp for Victory” propaganda to encourage farmers to grow hemp during World War II, a much needed stimulus to supplant dwindling imports from countries in the Pacific.

Other benefits of hemp fibers include:

  • Durable / Strong
  • Long lasting
  • Retains dyes
  • UV resistant
  • Holds shape
  • Mold/Mildew resistant
  • Biodegradable
