HEMP PRODUCT: Cardboard
SUB MARKETS: Packaging, Storage, Paper
Day 22 of our 31 Days of Hemp campaign highlights a useful alternative to a traditionally wasteful material: hemp cardboard. According to the US Environmental Protection Agency [EPA], “in most parts of the developed world, packaging constitutes as much as one-third [1/3] of the non-industrial solid waste stream” and admits, “new ways to increase the recovery of secondary materials, including packaging and plastics in particular, are clearly needed.” Coincidentally, hemp can fill such a dire niche, as the Kentucky HIA has already pointed out in posts related to paper and plastic.
Other reasons to add [or substitute] industrial hemp in packaging materials:
- Recyclable
- Renewable
- Strong / Durable
- Biodegradable
- Insect Repellent
- Alternative to cellophane
- Carbon-sink / negative
- 3-D printer-ready
- Non-toxic
